Thanks for visiting our blog Talking (a little less) Trash.  About eight years ago, I started thinking about the impact our increasingly disposable society was having on our earth.  Yes, it had crossed my mind earlier.  But, truthfully I was living a different life – a child-free, all about me life, that spent more time thinking about “self-improvement” and less time thinking or caring about things as large as global warming, or how our actions affect the earth in the long term.   

Then our boy was born, and a few years later our daughter came along.  Suddenly the news stories about melting ice caps, and stranded polar bears seemed more alarming.  It wasn’t just that somewhere in the future the earth might have some serious issues.  Now I was thinking that if I didn’t somehow speak up, change my actions, and make more effort, I’d continue to be part of the problem instead of part of the solution.  That is when I founded reCREATE.  (More on this later.) 

I set aside my love for spontaneous shopping sprees.  Now I have well thought out and executed trips to buy exactly what I set out to get.  Impulse buying – gone.    I started shrinking our family’s plastic footprint.  I ditched plastic containers as they fell apart, and bought a few tin containers to house the kids lunches.   We got into a relatively “green” groove, and I thought we were doing good…  Until I read about this family.  WOW.  I’d been thinking about this ever since, and I realized that having less “stuff” is very liberating.  So I talked to my husband and kids and we decided it’s time to step it up.  Because sometimes, less really is more.

My family is excited about our journey to be even less wasteful.  The kids have their detective hats on and my husband and I have our eyes peeled for quick and easy ways to reduce our waste, and we’re all excited about the opportunity to share what we learn.  Currently we put the one big bin out about 2/3 full each week.  Over ½ is recycling.  I know we can do better.  The challenge for the next two weeks is to see if we can put the can out every other week.  Baby steps.
