Creating Something from (Almost Nothing) - Our Cardboard Art

Besides trying to make less trash, I am the founder of reCREATE.  Our motto is More Art, Less Trash.  We are a creative reuse center.  That means we divert usable materials from the waste stream for use in art and creative expression.
At reCREATE, we started a large scale art project in January.  We made a four panel art piece depicting life in Placer County.  The art, was made entirely from cardboard, brown packing paper and adhesives.  The goal was to show that you don't need fancy art materials to make amazing art.  We have an artist on our staff named Dani Sawicky.  She oversaw the art work.  We have scores of volunteers help us with the art project.  We had a large team of volunteers from Hands On Sacramento - most of them from Aerojet.  We had help from girl scout troops, and families, and many individuals.  This was a collaborative art project, and we were very proud of the results.  This is what the final art looked like.

There are many details.  For example, the owl in the oak tree.
The field is being harvested.
The grove on the right are mandarin trees.  A favorite fruit from our region.

There was one final panel for the art.  It was a very windy day and the entire panel was knocked down, so our wine "glass" was damaged.

This panel represents Gladding McBean, a Lincoln ceramics company, one of the oldest businesses in California.
Trains have helped define our region.
Our emerging award winning wineries and  our beautiful open spaces.

We had a wonderful time making this art and thank One Big Bin for the opportunity to take on this project.  We thank American River Packaging  for donating some of their cardboard packaging that was destined to be recycled.  Lastly, we thank all of the people who helped us cut countless leaves and shapes to make this art a reality.
