A Sweet Valentine!

I am thrilled that my kids' school has a no candy rule.  It is healthier for my kids, but also, think about how many candy wrappers are not littering the school!  I love the challenge of coming up with cute, usable valentines, without generating a lot of trash.  We use paper we already have on hand, and try not to buy anything BUT also have the coolest Valentine in the class!  My all time favorite was this one, made of old crayon pieces:

It was so easy to make, and several kids said it was their favorite valentine!  Here is how easy they are to make:

  • Collect all of the random crayons we had floating around the house, broken ones and ones from restaurants.
  • Peel all the paper off of them, and break them into bits.
  • Place several different colored pieces into a heart shaped silicone candy mold.
  • Place in the oven at 200 degrees, and watch them melt.
  • Pull out of the oven when they have melted into a new crayon.
  • Tape them onto a card.  We designed printed ours at home on paper we got at reCREATE.  It was leftover paper-cuts from a printer.
Here is the final product:

Another idea for less-waste valentines:
  • We made these, for my daughters class.  Everyone uses note pads, so we just put a note on the front of it, the card put on the front was scrap paper we had on hand.
